Buying Quality Engineered Timber Flooring

Things to keep in mind about engineered timber flooring.

Quality of construction

When considering engineered timber flooring, the quality of construction needs to be your primary concern. Basing your buying decision on price alone, means you may end up with a product that has poor durability. This can mean you have to tear up your flooring and replace it sooner than you should. You end up spending more money.

Choose the proper grades of timber

When choosing engineered timber flooring, be aware of the proper grades of board. You can find specifications on different manufacturers’ products and through reviews and consumer reports. These describe the regions where the timber was sourced. It’s best to choose timber graded “Select” or “Appearance”. The grading ensures that your floor is visually appealing, with few defects.

Australian hardwoods are extremely durable

Engineered/floating timber flooring uses real timber. Therefore the better the quality of the timber, the better the finished floor will be. Engineered/floating floors made from Australian hardwoods are extremely long lasting. In comparison, floors made from Asian timbers don’t have the same hardness and will scratch and wear out much faster.

Check the quality of the core board

The core board is attached to your timber flooring. The quality of the core board is important. Only the best quality core board should be used. This makes sure your floor remains stable, won’t shrink or contract with changes of weather, and lasts longer. A quality finish on the core board determines how long the floor stays looking good and how much maintenance it will require.

Engineered Timber Flooring Styles

1 Strip Timber Flooring

1 Strip Planks

1 strip planks are constructed with a single strip of wood on the surface, making up the entire plank. It is a solid wood strip with no gaps in the design. This style provides the most authentic appearance.

2 Strip Timber Flooring

2 Strip Planks

2 strip planks are constructed with two strips of solid wood on the same plank.  A gap separating the two strips of wood is in the middle of the plank. giving the appearance of having two planks in one

3 Strip Timber Flooring

3 Strip Planks

3 strip planks are constructed with three pieces of solid wood fused together on the same plank giving a 3 in 1 plank effect.

Note: Not all 2 strip and 3 strip timber floors feature different pieces of wood. They are simply made to look like they have more than one piece of wood in their design in many cases.
