Buying Quality Timber Flooring

Things to keep in mind about timber flooring.

Quality of construction

When considering timber flooring, the quality of construction needs to be your primary concern. Basing your buying decision on price alone, means you may end up with a product that has poor durability. This can mean you have to tear up your flooring and replace it sooner than you should. You end up spending more money.

Choose the proper grades of timber

When choosing timber flooring, be aware of the proper grades of board. You can find specifications on different manufacturers’ products and through reviews and consumer reports. These describe the regions where the timber was sourced. It’s best to choose timber graded “Select” or “Appearance”. The grading ensures that your floor is visually appealing, with few defects.

Australian hardwoods are extremely durable

Engineered/floating timber flooring uses real timber. Therefore the better the quality of the timber, the better the finished floor will be. Engineered/floating floors made from Australian hardwoods are extremely long lasting. In comparison, floors made from Asian timbers don’t have the same hardness and will scratch and wear out much faster.

Check the quality of the core board

The core board is attached to your timber flooring. The quality of the core board is important. Only the best quality core board should be used. This makes sure your floor remains stable, won’t shrink or contract with changes of weather, and lasts longer. A quality finish on the core board determines how long the floor stays looking good and how much maintenance it will require.

Timber Flooring Styles

Kempas

A popular timber, which is grown in Malaysia and Indonesia, Kempas is very hard, with a medium grain and pink to reddish colour when laid. Over time, the timber undergoes a degree of colour change which enhances the floor’s appearance. The colours are muted in some areas, contrasting with others that darken slightly to a medium reddish colour.

Blue Gum

Found naturally in New South Wales to Queensland, this timber is also known as Sydney Blue Gum. With a straight grain that is sometimes interlocked, Blue Gum has a distinctive colour range from dark, rich pink through to brown. It is shown here in a three-strip configuration.

Spotted Gum

With colours varying from pale grey-browns and soft creams to rich chocolate brown, Spotted Gum is a very tough timber. Its wavy grain produces an attractive fiddle-back effect. It gains its “spotted” title from the soft mottled colour which is caused by weathering of the outer tree as it sheds strips of bark.

Merbau

Grown in South East Asia, Merbau has reddish / orange, course graining, with yellow “flecking” in the pores. The colour undergoes a large degree of change, including muting and darkening over time to a deeper orangey brown colour.

Wenge Stain

If you are seeking a bold, dark look, Wenge Stain provides a uniform dark-chocolate brown colour. Grown in Central Africa, Wenge is one of the world’s premier dark species. The stain is generally used over an Oak base.

Jarrah

This large hardwood is grown in South East Western Australia and the timber offers a range of colour from a light pink to deep burgundy-red with darker graining. Over time, Jarrah undergoes a degree of colour change, muting to a medium-to-dark burgundy-red as it ages. This makes Jarrah a favourite for flooring.

Tasmanian Oak

Tasmanian Oak is comprised of three species of Eucalypt commonly found in Tasmania. The combination of the timbers produces a blend of beautiful colouring ranging from pale cream to pink and red-brown.

Bamboo

A popular addition to flooring is Bamboo which is uniquely different to traditional hardwood flooring. Its unsurpassed elegant style, durability and exceptional beauty, make it a desirable product. The Moso Strand Woven Bamboo is the second hardest flooring in the world.

Sydney Blue Gum

The one-strip configuration and straight grain of Sydney Blue Gum has a distinct colour range from dark, rich pink through to brown. It is a well-known and loved timber found on the east coast of Australia.
